What is Breastfeeding Medicine?

Breastfeeding  Medicine practitioners have advanced training in managing more complex lactation situations. The scope of practice for a breastfeeding medicine provider is wider than an IBCLC lactation consultant. Our Advanced Practice Women's Health Nurse Practitioner has extra training that allows her to evaluate, diagnose and treat medical issues that may be impacting the ability for a parent to feed their baby.

Wisco Lactation takes a team approach and when our IBCLCs need the knowledge and support of a breastfeeding medicine provider we can refer within allowing seamless support for our families. No more waiting for outside referrals!

This service is also available to parents looking for more advanced support or other IBCLCs that need to refer a medically indicated case to us.

Longer visit times than you will get elsewhere!

Hospital-based breastfeeding medicine is still beholden to the hospital system. When lactation situations are complex more time is needed with the patient in order to provide the best possible care. Our minimum consultation time is 60 minutes compared to the 5-15 minutes you get in the hospital. Rushed care means missed pieces to the puzzle. At Wisco Lactation we spend the time to dig deep with a  full evaluation of both the parent and baby with the goal of finding the root cause (or causes) to your feeding challenges and address them head on. Mom and baby work together so all avenues need to be explored such as: infant weight gain, infant oral anatomy, milk transfer by observing a FULL feeding with weighted feeds, infant assessment for tension or diminished reflexes, full medical history for the nursing parent, full medication history, birth history, feeding plan management, addressing milk supply issues and ensuring pumping is optimized with  a hands on flange fitting and pump evaluation. We pride ourselves in close follow up until your goals are reached.

We have a judgement free approach
that puts mental health first, always.

We are deeply committed to providing inclusive and comprehensive lactation care to all families that we consult with. We provide unique, evidence-based support to families so that they may make their own informed choices in infant feeding. Our focus is to meet families where they are at and support them in a judgment free way that puts their mental health first.

Lactating parents need support and expert guidance from highly skilled providers. We are always learning  and growing as lactation professionals to better serve our clients.

I am a nurse practitioner and international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) with 6 years of experience in lactation, about 8 years in maternal-child health, and 3 years of “momming” and breastfeeding my own 2 kids.  I have a diverse background, working in a variety of settings with a wide demographic of patients. Some of my special interests are low milk supply, preventative lactation, tethered oral tissues (TOTs), over-supply, inducing lactation, and hybrid feeding.

I believe that pregnancy and lactation are innate processes, and I love to explore root cause and natural solutions whenever complications arise. I am passionate about expanding equitable access to quality care for pregnant and breastfeeding families. Pregnancy and breastfeeding will likely be some of the most vulnerable times in your life, which is why I encourage families to build an army of support-it really does “take a village”. I look forward to meeting and supporting you through your journey.

Loved working with Ashleigh and Alexiyah! They helped my breastfeeding journey so much and were able to help me meet my goals! Ashleigh helped so much with my pumping and daughter's latching discomfort and Alexiyah was critical to getting my supply where it needed to be to continue my exclusive breastfeeding. I would definitely recommend working with them to help meet your breastfeeding goals!
