There are many different positions to feed a baby. While there is no one size fits all approach to positions, as you and your baby get to know each other, you will find ones that you prefer.

When trying new positions, it can be helpful to have pillows available. These can help to take strain off your back. When latching, remember to bring your baby to your breast, instead of bringing your breast to your baby, this will allow for more comfort during the nursing session.

Laid back:
Baby is on you while you are reclined. Laid back position can be helpful in getting a good latch because gravity does most of the work with minimal assistance needed. This position also can be comfortable for the nursing parent and provides good support for the baby. While this can be good for many; it is one that is not seen often in pictures, so many are not familiar with it.

Cradle:
The position that is seen the most in pictures and that people are most familiar with where the nursing parent holds the baby in the arm that is on the same side of the feeding breast. While this position works for some, it can be a challenge for others because the parent does not have full control of the baby's head.

Football or clutch:
Allows for control of the baby's head and is good for smaller babies with limited head control. Many parents like this position because it is easy to see the baby's mouth and watch for swallows. This is also a good one for birthing parents who are recovering from a cesarean section.

Cross Cradle:
Is another great option to help support the neck and head while nursing a baby. This can be very helpful for newborns.

Side-lying:
This position is done lying on a flat surface like a bed and allows for laying down while nursing the baby. This position takes some practice where the nursing parent lays on their side while they use their arm to support the baby while they use one hand to support the baby as they nurse and the other arm to support their own head.
Trying different nursing positions can be overwhelming and take practice! As always, we are here to help!
